Adaptation and Adaptation Benefits

Adaptation

Adaptation is the "adjustment in natural or human systems in response to actual or expected climatic stimuli or their effects, which moderates harm or exploits beneficial opportunities. Various types of adaptation can be distinguished, including anticipatory, autonomous and planned adaptation" (IPCC, WG II, 2007).

Adaptation Benefits

Adaptation benefits are the avoided damage costs or the accrued benefits following the adoption and implementation of adaptation measures. Within the AMICA project, different types of adaptation benefits are distinguished, mainly according to the sort of climate impact they respond to: supply security (energy system), thermal comfort, risk prevention (climate extremes), reduction of environmental damages and urban biodiversity.
